Laughing the Blues Away
Dr. Moylan Mills, Professor Emeritus of Integrative Arts at the Pennsylvania State University and Lecturer in Film at Chestnut Hill College
Thursdays, January 28, February 4, 11, 25, 12:30-3pm
Film introduction and discussion is moderated by Dr. Moylan Mills, Professor Emeritus of Integrative Arts at The Pennsylvania State University and Lecturer in Film at Chestnut Hill College.
In an economic period similar to the one we are currently experiencing, Hollywood came to the rescue with a series of marvelously clever and amusing films. So to laugh the blues and unhappy news away, we present a series of these deliciously witty and sophisticated films from the heyday of Tinsel Town glamour--the 1930s and 1940s.
The movies:
Midnight (1939) With only a gold lamé gown to her name, a down-on-her-luck chorus girl stranded in Paris meets a Hungarian taxi driver and a wealthy French bon vivant - delirious mayhem ensues. Thursday, January 28
His Girl Friday (1940) Cary Grant is a hardboiled newspaper editor and Rosalind Russell is his ex-wife and crackerjack reporter in this witty send-up of the newspaper business. Thursday, February 4
Swing Time (1936) Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers have never been better than in this madcap comedy punctuated with marvelous dance numbers and featuring one of Jerome Kern’s most lyrical scores. Thursday, February 11
The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek (1944) Hilarious screwball comedy directed by the master of comic timing Preston Sturges. We have a small town girl pregnant by a passing G.I. whose name she doesn’t remember and her dorky admirer who is willing to take the blame. Thursday, February 25

Exploring Watercolor Techniques: Part II
Jim McFarlane
Monday-Wednesday, January 4-6, 10am-3pm
This workshop will give you the opportunity to work with three distinct watercolor techniques. Each day will be used to fully explore one of the following three techniques: wet-in-wet, direct painting and glazing. Very different in the final result, each offers exciting creative experiences. The three techniques are traditional, non-gimmicky treatments of the medium and can be used alone or in combination. You will select one or a combination of these techniques that suits your present style or perhaps discover that you have found a new style. Great for all levels.

April 10-11, 10am-4pm
Using a variety of drawing mediums - ink, charcoal, and pencil - we’ll investigate the function of line, how line separates one thing from another, how it forms shapes and space, how it creates dark and light. We’ll also explore how things land on the page, that is, how compositional decisions can be intuitive and intentional. Still life, the live model, and your imagination will be used as you explore the world of black and white – and shades of gray. This class is perfect for anyone who wants to improve their drawing skills. All levels welcome.
