American Art 1900-1940: Realism and Regionalism to American Modernism

This course will examine the artistic movements in America that characterize the first half of the twentieth century - when realism meets modernism. The class will begin with the Ashcan School and artists such as John Sloan, George Lucs and George Bellows as examples of the continuation of the strong tradition of realism in American art. When the Armory Show opened in New York in 1913, Americans embraced European modernism and its abstract tendencies. Artists, such as Frank Stella, Charles Sheeler and Stuart Davis will be discussed as founders of American modernism.

Workshops for Adults and Teachers
Figure in the Landscape – Painting with Elizabeth Osborne
Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and June 22

This very special opportunity with nationally acclaimed landscape painter Elizabeth Osborne will explore alla prima painting out of doors on Woodmere’s expansive grounds. With a model situated in the landscape, students of all levels will study the important aspects of painting: color, composition, light, pictorial space and drawing as seen in nature. The class will focus on small finished paintings. This class is open to advanced beginners to advanced painters and will include one slide lecture and a group critique. All mediums are permitted.

Studio Painting for Teens

Develop your skills with paint in this class just for teens. You’ll draw and paint from the model and from still-life setups. Have fun, refine your skills and build up your portfolio. This class is for all levels, ages 16 and up.

The Figure in Context

Working in a studio environment, students will apply their oil painting skills to the classic theme of the figure in a setting. Our clothed model will be set among props to simulate a naturalistic environment, and the pose will be sustained for three days. During the course of the workshop we'll discuss issues such as content, context, point of view and expressive posture, as well as the formal aesthetic concerns of composition, color mixing and application of the paint.

The Perceptual Moment in the Light of Day: Two-Day Workshop Intensive with Stuart Shils
Saturday and Sunday, May 10, 11, 9-4pm, plus a mandatory kick-off lecture on Friday,
May 9, at 7pm
In the tradition of alla prima, emphasis will be placed on very direct work, focusing on understanding the perceptual process in front of nature, the editorial response that follows in the head of the painter, and how that takes form in two dimensions via paint or drawing. Demonstrations will address strategies for entering into a work, establishing a conceptual perceptual and technical foundation as well as the development of color. Plein Air Landscape Painting

Classes will take place outdoors at specific locations in or near the Philadelphia area. Students will meet at each location and learn to paint from direct observation with an emphasis on composition and perspective. Tonal balance and painting technique will also be explored. Individual instruction will be given during each session. This landscape painting class is open to students of all levels.

Beginning Drawing and Painting I and II

Have you ever wanted to draw or paint, but didn’t know where to begin? Then this class is for you. Demonstrations will be given on still life and landscape. Art elements, including line, composition, color, subject matter and perspective, will be discussed, along with the use of various materials. Drawing II students will continue to explore line, tone and perspective with an emphasis on composition.

Students will draw and paint the figure. Demonstrations will be given and the selection and usage of materials will be discussed. There will be extended poses for several weeks, allowing the students to learn the basics, such as gesture, proportion, composition and anatomy. Great for all levels.

Creating a Mood through Still Life

Painting in oil directly from still-life setups, students will learn the importance of color and tone relationships to create a sense of space. We will map shapes and color equivalents with the goal of achieving unity through consistency of light. Atmospheric perspective will be considered as a tool to create mystery and vividness in your work. Students will bring in objects and participate in setting up the still life. Perfect for all levels, including those new to oil painting.

Fundamentals of Portrait Painting

The instructor will demonstrate and discuss the procedure of painting a
portrait. Basic understanding of mixing color and achieving likeness is the primary emphasis, along with discussions on the selection and use of materials. This class is designed for students of all levels.

Alla Prima Painting

Using still life, students will paint small, one-session paintings from direct observation. Emphasis will be on achieving a pictorial effect based on the broad distribution of light and shadow. Color, with an emphasis on values, will be applied in an unpolished, vigorous manner. Students will practice one-strike brushstrokes, mixing their best approximation of the color they see and applying it in one mark in the place where it belongs.

Watercolor and Design

Still Life in a Modern Context

This class will use the still life as a point of departure for investigating modern techniques that explore abstraction. Emphasis will be on using modernist ideas of color and space. Students will concentrate on pursuing their individual ideas for painting, with informal critiques and discussions throughout. Recommended for advanced beginners or intermediate painters.

Drawing for Expression

This class focuses on accurate and expressive drawing while encouraging inspiration and spontaneity. Study gesture/contour line, negative-positive space, composition, perspective and shading through still life, landscape and portrait. Included will be discussions on taking a personal approach to drawing while using different media. “Checkpoint assignments” will be given in order to practice drawing at home. Great for all levels, ages 15 and up.

Painting in the Landscape

This alla prima landscape class is for painters of all levels. The class will meet at several different locations, including Valley Green, Morris Arboretum, and the Schuylkill River. Demonstrations will be given in oils, but students are welcome to work in other media as well. Emphasis will be on painting quickly and expressively. Students will be instructed in seeing the landscape in broad terms in order to make rapid decisions about mixing color and thinking about composition.

Painting – Inside and Out

Learn the joys of landscape painting for part of the week and then come inside our studio to explore still life and figure painting. Using a formal arrangement of natural objects, plants, and flowers, you’ll create beautiful still life paintings. You’ll also have an opportunity to paint from a live, clothed model. Whether inside or outside, you’ll learn how to look through your eyes as an artist.

Comic Strip Art

Nationally syndicated cartoonist Robb Armstrong (Jump Start) leads you through a hands-on introduction to the world of comic strip art. Learn about developing characters, writing, and crafting humor. Students will have the opportunity to create a comic strip of their own and learn how to present their work to real syndicates.

Papermaking and Printmaking

Spend two days making paper at Rittenhouse Town’s authentic papermaking studio and three days in Woodmere’s art studios making art out of your newly created paper. You’ll learn great printmaking techniques such as Suminigashi, Adinkra printing, and collographs.

Using papier mache, paint and mixed-media collage materials, we will design fabulous gowns, shoes, neckties and coats. To gain inspiration, we will look at the painterly elegance of John Singer Sargent's portraits, the fantastic color and patterns of Henri Matisse's figure studies, and the searching lines of Jim Dine's bathrobe drawings.

Nature Books

Each day you’ll make a new book inspired by nature. You’ll learn to identify trees by their leaves as you make a book of leaf rubbings. You’ll make a wonderful pop-up accordion book of animals; and while learning about various Pennsylvania wildflowers, make a pop-up flower garden book. Day four in this class is all about the earth’s cycles. As a finale, you will make a blank nature journal with a cover that has pockets to continue interacting with nature.

Batik on Fabric

Learn the ancient technique of batik, using dyes with molten wax resist on fabric. We will use traditional batik tools, as well as brushes, to create paintings and possibly even some wearable art.

Art and Storytelling

Artists have used many different formats to tell their stories. Personal experiences, tales of adventure and fantasy, and events from history are some examples. In this class, we will tell stories about our own lives with our families and friends as the main characters. Small books, quilt-like collages, paintings and a collaborative mural will be our story-telling mediums.

Animals Adventure

In this class we’ll spend one morning at the Philadelphia Zoo and sketch animals. With our sketchbooks full, we’ll head back into Woodmere’s studio and create wonderful paintings, prints, and sculptures. Students and parents meet at the zoo on Monday and at Woodmere the rest of the week.

Construction Zone: Hand-building in Clay

Explore the possibilities of hand-building with self-drying clay. Students will learn to make coil and slab pots, as well as sculptures. You’ll model animals, people, and whatever your heart desires.

Jamming in the Jungle: Installation Project in Millard Children’s Gallery Woodmere Staff
Ages: 7 and above, 3-5pm
The exotic magic of the jungle will come to life in Woodmere’s Helen Millard Gallery as you paint, draw, print, and make masks. Textures, patterns, and colors galore will emerge as you build a glorious jungle for jamming. Installation will be on view through August 24.

Theatre Arts for Young People

Hand-drawn Animation

Ages 7-12, 6-8pm
Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D artwork in order to create an illusion of movement. In this class you’ll learn the basics of hand-drawn animation. Character animation, timing and pacing of movement will be taught. Advanced lessons will be provided for those who have animated before.

Collecting Stories, Creating Art
Sunday, April 6, 1-3 pm
Works of art often tell stories. Artists can present narratives in many ways—by using a series of images representing moments in a story or by selecting a central moment to stand for the whole story. In this family day, we’ll look at several works and add a twist to the plot by placing ourselves in the story.
Artists at Work

Woodmere’s galleries have been transformed into artist studios. Tour the museum, meet the artists, and take home an Artists at Work booklet. Tour begins at 1pm.
The Child Who Loved to Draw
Sunday, June 8, 1-3pm
Benjamin West loved to draw when he was a little boy. Come view the exhibition of his drawings and then create your own work of art. Still-life setups will be in the galleries, as will a costumed model. $5 fee for this special drawing event.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Membership to the Woodmere Art Museum is required for art classes.
You will be notified only if a class is cancelled. Payment for classes is due at the time of registration.
Cancellation policy:
The museum reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment. In the event of a cancellation, students will be notified and full tuition will be refunded.
Withdrawals/refund policy:
Woodmere requires one week’s advanced notice of withdrawal from class or a $30 cancellation fee will be incurred. No refunds after the first class.
Scholarships available:
Scholarships for students grades K-12 are available based on financial need. Contact the Education Department at 215-247-0948 to apply.
Publicity policy:
Woodmere Art Museum reserves the right to use photos taken during classes and other programs. Registration in a class gives Woodmere permission to use that image without further consent.
