Jessie Wilcox Smith became one of America’s most widely known illustrators of children. Her particular gift was the ability to put into visual form the many delightful characters referred to in the texts of children’s books and other fictional literature. Magazine covers, as well, became her special domain for conveying to millions of American her unique artistic talents, producing many for the best known periodicals of the day, including Good Housekeeping, Ladies’ Home Journal, House and Garden, McClure’s Magazine, Scribner’s Magazine, Woman’s Home Companion, and others. Woodmere Art Museum’s Lost is the original cover illustration from a short series entitled “Tragedies of Childhood.” It appeared on the front cover of the January 27, 1907 issue of Collier’s Weekly. |
