Adult Studio Classes

Woodmere Art Museum membership is required for all classes. All classes are held in the Widener studio. With painters and artists in mind, the studio offers a professional setting with ample north light, easy access, and plenty of free parking.

Studio Oil Painting

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than painting. In this class, students use photographs as source material rather than direct observation in organizing and creating a painting. Designed to help students execute a painting of their own subject matter, this class focuses on composition, perspective, color mixing, and painting techniques. Individual instruction is given throughout each session. Students of all levels are welcome.

This class is perfect for anyone who's ever wanted to draw or paint, but did not know where to begin. Still life and landscape demonstrations are provided. Elements of line, composition, color, and perspective are discussed, as well as subject matter and the use of various materials. Drawing II students continue to explore line, tone, and perspective with an emphasis on composition.


Introduction to Oil Painting

The figure is one of the most poetic and challenging subjects to draw. In this class students execute drawings from direct observation of the model to develop their understanding of form, anatomy, proportion, and the expressive use of materials. Students will study the figure in a variety of poses and contexts. Multiple drawing approaches – contour, cross-contour, and tone will be used. Intermediate to advanced level students may join the class as an open studio experience, and draw the model independent of the instruction.


Studio Painting and Drawing

This class emphasizes solid technical skill development and an understanding of color, line, form, and space. Students are encouraged to develop a personal style and explore still life and other subject matter. Recommended for beginners or intermediate students who want to improve their painting and observation skills.


NEW! One a Day: Creating a Still Life in One Sitting

Too often a painting may appear labored or overworked. In this class students will learn to be more decisive in their use of color and composition. Each week we will set up a series of still lifes which are simple enough to be addressed quickly. We will discuss the basics of choosing subject matter and arranging it to create a meaningful composition. Students will produce a painting each week. Great still life painters from art history will also be talked about. Enjoy this quick, fresh approach to painting. This class is for painters of all levels.


Abstract Painting: Still Life in a Modern Context

Innumerable artists of our time have used the language of abstraction—color, line, texture, scale, and form—to express the ideas, emotions, or stories that are better expressed in this manner than through traditional modes of representation. This class uses the still life as a point of departure for investigating modern techniques that explore abstraction. Students pursue their individual ideas for painting, with informal critiques and discussions throughout. Recommended for advanced beginners to intermediate painters.

Using the clothed model, photographs and still life objects, students will cultivate their personal way of painting in a nurturing and encouraging environment. Demonstrations and discussions, interaction among the students, and a positive, open atmosphere are characteristic of this class. Emphasis will be on providing individual attention tailored to each student's interests and requests. Beginners seeking basic instruction as well as more advanced painters looking to refine their vision or improve their skills are welcome. (Improved lighting in the studio!)


Watercolor and Design

Learn how to use professional collage and mixed media techniques. Be inspired by the work of Bearden, Miro, Matisse, Marca-Relli, and Rauschenberg. Work on paper, board, or canvas in any style and enjoy an encouraging atmosphere that promotes your own personal style. Intermediate to advanced painters, printmakers, and collage artists are welcome. Students are required to bring their own supplies and may u5se any media with the exception of oil paints and soft pastels. The instructor will provide a suggested list of supplies. There will be one-on-one and group critiques.


NEW! Batik – Surface Design

With an emphasis on fun, this class will introduce you to the ancient art of batik. Using dyes and a molten wax resist technique you'll create paintings and designs on fabrics. The design possibilities are only limited by your imagination. You can work realistically or in an abstract style. This class will include demonstrations and plenty of examples of traditional batiking as well as its application in a contemporary manner. All levels welcome. Enjoy individual instruction in a relaxed, informal setting.


Introduction to the Figure

This class includes demonstrations of figure drawing and painting, as well as discussion of the selection and usage of materials. Students learn to see the model in terms of color, light, and shadow; gain a basic understanding of mixing color and achieving likeness; and learn how to select and use materials, including paint, brushes, canvas, and palette.

This class is for students interested in trying new techniques and media. Students will be introduced to a variety of materials with which to experiment and make art. Oil paints, pastels, acrylic paint, and ink will be some of the media. Geared for all levels, this class is a great introduction for beginners or for more advanced artists interested in expanding their repertoire, with a particular focus on using their materials to think and see visually. Critiques will be offered weekly, with a special guest critique from noted painter Bill Scott.
